Parenthood (1989): Am I the ONLY One Who Finds This Overrated?
Okay, so I finally caved and watched 'Parenthood' (1989) because everyone and their mother has told me it's the definitive family movie. Call me crazy, but I just don't get the hype. I mean, yeah, some moments are relatable, especially Steve Martin stressing out about his kid's 'gifted' label. But honestly, a lot of it felt...forced? Like it was trying way too hard to manufacture these heartwarming moments and quirky family dynamics. Like, the whole Gil (Steve Martin) losing it because his kid got put in a 'therapy' class? I get it, pressure, sure. But it felt like a sitcom level of over-the-top anxiety. And don't even get me started on Keanu Reeves' character. He's the 'cool uncle' schtick just felt so incredibly dated and frankly, kinda boring. Everyone acts like this is a 'real' portrayal of family life. Real families aren't always this conveniently eccentric and always ready with a life lesson. Maybe I'm just a cynic. But am I the only one who thinks 'Parenthood' is seriously overrated? It's fine, whatever. Not terrible, but hardly the cinematic masterpiece everyone claims. Prove me wrong. What am i missing? Oh, and BTW, anyone else think that scene where they are all on the horses is the film making equivalent of nails on a chalkboard? I'm wincing just thinking about it.
