Asterix and the Big Fight: A Bit Mad, Just Like Getafix!
Alright, so I recently revisited "Asterix and the Big Fight" (1989), and I have thoughts. It's one of those Asterix films that gets a bit overlooked, I think, probably because it's not based as directly on a single, iconic comic album like, say, "Asterix and Cleopatra." But it's got its moments, genuinely funny ones, and some that are...well, let's say 'interesting.' The core plot point, Getafix going bonkers after Obelix's poorly aimed menhir, is actually brilliant. The escalating chaos as he starts brewing everything except the magic potion – hair growing tonic that makes you sprout foliage all over, another that makes everyone transparent – is pure slapstick gold. I especially loved the centurion's reaction to becoming invisible; the voice acting really sells it. And the political intrigue, with the Romans trying to rig the chieftain elections with a hypnotized contender, is surprisingly clever for a kids' movie. However, it does feel a tad… disjointed at times. Maybe it's because they're drawing elements from different stories, but the pacing feels uneven compared to some of the other films. And honestly, some of the animation is a little rough around the edges; there's a scene where Asterix is running and his face just looks wrong. The overall story isn't nearly as tight as something like, say, "Asterix in Britain," and honestly, I don't have any particularly found memories of it like "Asterix Conquers America". But, hey, it's still Asterix, and there's plenty of goofy fun to be had. I'd say it's worth a watch if you're a fan, but don't go in expecting a perfect adaptation. I'll give it a 6.5/10. Enjoyable, but flawed. What are your thoughts?
