Asterix and the Big Fight: A Bit of a Nostalgia Trip!
Okay, so the kids and I watched "Asterix and the Big Fight" (1989) last night. It's an oldie but a goodie, and honestly, it's probably been 20+ years since I last saw it! For those who don't know, Getafix, the druid, gets hit by a menhir (thanks, Obelix!) and goes completely bonkers, losing his memory and becoming… well, let's just say he starts making some interesting potions. The premise of solving problems with a big ol' punch-up is a bit…simplistic, but hey, it's Asterix! The kids seemed to enjoy the cartoonish violence, and honestly, I chuckled a few times too. It's hard not to when you see a Roman soldier get launched into the air. My youngest was particularly fascinated with Cacofonix, the bard. She kept asking why everyone hated his singing so much, lol. We had a little discussion about different tastes in music afterwards, which was unexpected but kinda wholesome. The movie isn't perfect, the animation is definitely dated (but in a charming way, I think?), and the plot is pretty thin. But it's lighthearted and, importantly, it's something the whole family can watch without any awkward scenes. I mean, yes, there is fighting, but it's of the slapstick variety. I think my favorite part is still when Obelix is trying to help Getafix remember the magic potion recipe. His attempts are hilarious, although a tad misguided. Also, the names! I always get a kick out of the Roman names they come up with - so clever! Overall, it's a fun, nostalgic movie night pick. Definitely not the most intellectual film ever, but sometimes you just need some silly, family-friendly entertainment. What are your thoughts? Anyone else used to watch this as a kid? Am I just blinded by nostalgia?
