Al Pacino in 'Sea of Love' - Underrated Gem?
Okay, so I was revisiting some older Pacino films the other night, and 'Sea of Love' (1989) came up. I know it's not Dog Day Afternoon or Heat, but I honestly think it's super underrated. It's got that late 80s/early 90s New York grit that I just eat up, and Pacino as the jaded, divorce-cop Frank Keller is just...chef's kiss. He's so weary, you know? You can practically feel the weight of twenty years on the force settling on his shoulders. I especially loved the scenes where he's undercover in the singles ads, trying to find the woman who might be a serial killer. The awkwardness of those dates, his interactions with Ellen Barkin's Helen Cruikshank... it's all so perfectly uncomfortable and believable. And Barkin is just fantastic. I mean, you're constantly wondering if she's the one; she really nails the ambiguity. And that scene in her apartment, when he's trying to figure her out, the tension is AMAZING!! I'm not usually a fan of these types of commercial films, but it stands out here. Plus, the soundtrack is killer – all those old romantic classics. And the plot twists are genuinely surprising, even after all these years. Anyone else a secret 'Sea of Love' fan? I feel like it doesn't get enough love (haha, pun intended!). What do you think would be the top pick for other underrated Pacino films?? Anyway, I just wanted to give this one a shout-out. It's worth checking out if you're in the mood for a smart, sexy thriller with a great cast and a classic late-80s vibe.
