Okay, "Always" - Spielberg's Sentimental Side?

Alright everyone, so last night I checked out "Always" (1989). Yeah, the Spielberg one. I'm on this kick of diving into classics I somehow missed, and this one popped up. Plot-wise, it's about Pete, a total hotshot pilot, who dies and then becomes a guardian angel for another young pilot. Oh, and he has to watch his girlfriend, Dorinda, move on. That SETUP is wild, right? Honestly? I went in expecting some heavy-handed Spielberg schmaltz, and... I kinda got it? Don't get me wrong, the aerial stuff is AMAZING. The scene where Pete's flying through the fire and the plane is silhouetted against the flames? Pure Spielberg magic. But the love triangle from beyond the grave got a little cheesy for me. Holly Hunter killed it as Dorinda, though. You really felt her pain and confusion. I liked that she wasn't just some damsel, she has agency and is clearly smart and broken by her situation. The whole dynamic between her and Pete-as-a-ghost felt almost... creepy at times? Especially when he's pushing her towards the new guy. I gotta say, I was surprised at the casting. John Goodman as Pete's best friend? Perfect. Richard Dreyfuss as the angel? Unexpected but enjoyable. Did anyone else feel like the whole angle with the talking angels kinda took you out of the seriousness of the premise? I get that it's Spielberg, but it felt like too much. Plus, if Pete is an angel, does that mean he has access to a bank? Overall, "Always" is...fine? It's not mind-blowing, but it's a decent watch if you're into aviation stuff and slightly melodramatic romances. I am glad to have added it to the list of classics I've viewed, but I might need to watch something hardcore to cleanse my palate. Any suggestions?
