"Society" - Weird AF but Worth the Dip? (Soundtrack Thoughts)

Okay, so I finally got around to watching "Society" (1989). I knew going in it was gonna be… something. And yeah, it delivered on the weirdness. The whole plot with Bill Whitney feeling like an outsider in his own family, that part was kinda relatable in a dark, satirical way. But then...butt-stuff happens. Let's just say the 'shunting' scene is burned into my brain forever. Visually, it's insane. But being me, you know I was listening hard to the score. It's by Mark Ryder, and it's...interesting. It's got this very 80s synth vibe going on, but it's also surprisingly unsettling in moments. There's not really a huge noticeable theme, at least not one that REALLY grabs you, it serves the purpose of adding to the 'yuck' factor on screen. I think it kinda gets a bit lost in all the body horror, but that might be more a reflection of the movie being SO visually striking, than the score being bad. It's just...subtle? Honestly, I'm still processing the ending. Was it all a metaphor? Was it just Cronenberg-lite excess? I don't know. But I do know that I'm gonna be thinking about that shunting scene for a while. And maybe giving the score a relisten with the volume up and the visuals off :p Overall, I'm not sure I 'enjoyed' "Society" in the traditional sense, but it's definitely left an impression. If you like your horror with a healthy dose of messed-up social commentary and buckets of goo, give it a look. Just maybe skip dinner beforehand.
