"Knick Knack" - Pixar's Hidden Gem & Sound Design Genius!

Okay, so I just re-watched "Knick Knack" (1989) - that old Pixar short with the snowman stuck in the snow globe - and I'm convinced it's seriously underrated. I mean, yeah, the animation is dated compared to today's stuff, but the storytelling and sound design are pure gold. It's amazing how much personality they packed into a few minutes with almost no dialogue! Specifically, the whole 'escape' sequence? Masterful. The way they use sound to build tension as he's trying to pry open the globe, and then that satisfying "pop" when he finally gets out…chef's kiss. And the little details, like the way the other knick-knacks are animated - the Egyptian mummy's head turning, the hula girl's gentle sway - it all adds to this feeling of wishing you were there, even though it's clearly a toy shelf. It's also a little hilarious in the way it portrays things. Like the way the snowman is so desperate to get out of his snow globe. I think what really sells it for me is how simple and relatable the humor is. The snowman's unrequited crush, his desperate attempts to reach her, and the final punchline…it's just classic Pixar. And honestly, for something made so early in their history, it holds up remarkably well. I especially wonder how they managed to do the sound design without the tools available today. Anyone else feel like "Knick Knack" deserves more love? Or am I just being a sentimental, tech-obsessed weirdo? Let me know your thoughts!
