Blind Fury: Rutger Hauer Kicks SO Much Ass - But Did It Age Well?
Okay horror and thriller peeps, I just rewatched Blind Fury (1989) – yeah, the one with Rutger Hauer as the blind Vietnam vet with a sword cane. I remembered LOVING this movie as a kid. The action scenes are just so over the top and Hauer is perfect as Nick Parker. Seriously, who else could pull off being both badass AND kinda goofy? The scene where he takes down like, a whole bar full of thugs is still awesome. But… watching it now, some of the stuff feels a little dated, you know? The whole 'innocent kid needing rescued' trope is pretty tired, and some of the villains are cartoonishly evil. Plus, the 'blind guy navigates the world' gags are a little insensitive, maybe? Still, the sword fights are killer. I actually yelled at the tv when he did that blind-folded trick at the end. So, my question is: does the sheer fun and the kick-ass Rutger Hauer factor outweigh the cheesiness and potentially iffy bits? Am I just blinded by nostalgia, or is Blind Fury still a legitimately good action flick? What are your thoughts? Especially interested to hear from anyone who saw it for the first time recently!
