Santa Sangre: WTF did I just watch? (In a good way?)

Okay, so I just finished watching Santa Sangre (1989) and...wow. I’m still processing it. I went in knowing basically nothing other than it was supposed to be...intense. And yeah, "intense" is putting it mildly. This film is a whole other level of bizarre, beautiful, and deeply disturbing. Anyone else seen this fever dream of a movie? I'm particularly fascinated by Fenix's relationship with his mother. It's so messed up and co-dependent, but also somehow understandable given the circumstances. The whole armless priestess thing is just...wild. I almost choked when she started directing him with her feet. And the magic tricks! Were they actually good, or was I just too distracted by everything else happening to notice? The scene with the elephants just wandering around felt so surreal, like something out of a dream (or maybe a nightmare, tbh). I know Jodorowsky's name isn't mentioned but I've seen the film mentioned as his. The circus atmosphere felt genuinely seedy and unsettling, not the glamorous, romantic kind you usually see. It's like a circus run by a family of psychopaths. One little thing that stuck with me was the bloody hands on the wall. Did anyone else find that scene particularly haunting? Is there a metaphor I'm completely missing here? Anyway, I'm genuinely curious what other people think about this film. Was it brilliant, completely bonkers, or a little bit of both? And what's the deal with that ending? I'm left with so many questions (and maybe a slight feeling of needing a shower, haha). I watched it on a whim because I like watching international releases, but I feel like I stumbled onto something profoundly weird and amazing. Let's discuss!
