Mystery Train: Is Screamin' Jay REALLY Elvis in disguise?! (spoilers)
Okay, so I finally got around to watching Jim Jarmusch's Mystery Train (don't know why I waited so long!). I really dug the whole vibe - the sleepy Memphis atmosphere, the quirky characters, the way the stories kind of intersected but not really. I especially loved the Japanese couple, Jun and Mitsuko; their Elvis obsession was both hilarious and kind of touching. What really got me thinking, though, was Screamin' Jay Hawkins' cameo as the night clerk at the Arcade Hotel. Am I the only one who got the strong impression that he was supposed to be, like, a secret Elvis stand-in? The way he delivers his lines, the knowing glances... plus, the whole legend of Elvis sightings after his death. I know Jarmusch is all about ambiguity, but it felt too deliberate to just be a coincidence. And the room they are looking for is Elvis's Honeymoon suite! Then the random gun shot when he puts on Elvis. Just TOO good! I'm leaning towards Hawkins' character representing the enduring idea of Elvis, but the director plays up Elvis so much, it gets you thinking. What was that screaming about too?! Did anyone else pick up on that, or am I reading way too much into things? What are your theories? And does anyone know if Jarmusch has ever talked about this in interviews? I gotta know!
