Warlock (1989): Underrated or am I the only one?
Okay, so I just re-watched Warlock (1989) for the first time in like, forever. And honestly, I think it holds up pretty well! I know some people trash it, calling it cheesy, but hear me out... I think it's got a really cool premise, and while the special effects are dated, they're kinda charmingly so, y'know? I was trying to figure out who directed this thing and couldn't find a name? Anyway the pacing is definitely uneven, but I think the whole fish-out-of-water aspect with the Warlock (Julian Sands – RIP – he was great!) trying to adapt to the 80s is genuinely funny. And Lori Singer as Kassandra is surprisingly good. Plus, the desperation of Redferne (Richard E. Grant) chasing him across time is so compelling. I especially loved the scene where the Warlock steals the mannequin hand. Creepy and effective! My question is, am I alone in thinking this movie is better than its reputation? Is it a perfect film? Absolutely not. But I think it's a fun, inventive horror-fantasy flick that deserves a little more love. Maybe I'm just nostalgic, haha. What did folks think of the ending? I always felt it was a bit rushed, like they ran out of budget or something. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it feels like they could have built up more to the final confrontation to give it more punch.
