Roseanne Barr vs. Meryl Streep in a batshit crazy comedy? YES PLEASE. (She-Devil)
Okay, so I just re-watched "She-Devil" (1989) and I gotta say, it holds up. It's not gonna win any awards for subtlety, but the sheer audacity of Roseanne Barr's performance is amazing. Seriously, she goes full scorched-earth housewife. That scene where she's systematically destroying all of Bob's (Ed Begley Jr.) prized possessions? Absolute gold. You can feel the righteous anger. I mean, 'A writer writes!' but really Bob, you're gonna leave Roseanne for Meryl Streep playing a romance novelist named Mary Fisher? Come on! Streep's clearly having a blast playing against type. She's got this whole ridiculous diva thing going on, and her character is just so deliciously awful. I think the best part is just seeing the two of them (Roseanne and Meryl) on screen together. It's a clash of acting styles that somehow works. What's really crazy is that 'She-Devil' is directed by Susan Seidelman. Her other work (Like 'Desperately Seeking Susan') is so different! This feels like a departure, and I'm here for it. The revenge plot gets progressively more bonkers. You almost start rooting for Ruth (Roseanne) even though some of the stuff she does is pretty messed up. It's a dark comedy, for sure but, you know, sometimes you just need to see a scorned woman take down a cheating husband and his ridiculously wealthy mistress one methodical step at a time. It's so over-the-top that you can't help but laugh. And who doesn't need a good laugh these days, right? I'm just saying, next time you're looking for something a little different, give "She-Devil" a shot. You might be pleasantly surprised... or at least entertained by the sheer craziness of it all.
