Fabulous Baker Boys: Still Finding New Things!
Okay, so I've watched "The Fabulous Baker Boys" like, a million times. Seriously, it's my go-to rainy day movie. And every single time, I notice something new! Like, this time I was really focusing on Jack Bridges (Jeff Bridges), and his whole detached vibe. You can tell he's incredibly talented, but he's so…disinterested? It's like playing piano is just a job, not a passion anymore. The scene where he's playing for the obviously bored hotel guests, ugh, I felt that in my soul. And Michelle Pfeiffer, obviously she's iconic in this role. Stunning. But it's not just her looks; it's the way she carries herself as Susie Diamond. She KNOWS she's good, maybe even better than the Baker boys initially think. I love that little smirk she has when she nails that "More Than You Know" audition. Power move! I also paid more attention to Frank's (Beau Bridges) character this time around. He's trying so hard to keep everything together, bless his heart. You can see the cracks forming though. I think what makes this movie so good is the little details. Like the way Jack smokes, or the awkward silences between the brothers. It feels so real and relatable, even though, you know, I'm not a lounge singer or a jazz musician! The ending still gets me every time, too. It's not a neat, tied-up happy ending, which I appreciate. I would have loved it if Jack and Susie stayed together, but it wouldn't have been realistic for their characters I guess. It's more bittersweet, and way more believable. Anyway, just wanted to share my latest thoughts. Has anyone else seen it a bunch of times? What details did you pick up on? I'm always looking for new insights! I'm wondering, did the director ever work with Jeff and Beau before? Their chemistry is spot on.
