"Fabulous Baker Boys": More Like Fabulously Boring?
Okay, alright, so I finally caved and watched "The Fabulous Baker Boys." Everyone online seems to get a bit weepy-eyed and nostalgic about it. "Oh, the chemistry! The smoky atmosphere! Pfeiffer's iconic performance!" Yeah, yeah, I get it. It's got that late-80s vibe in spades, which usually means it's overrated. And guess what? I wasn't wrong. Don't get me wrong, Michelle Pfeiffer is, well, Michelle Pfeiffer. She looks stunning singing "Makin' Whoopee," sure. But her character, Susie Diamond, is basically nothing but a walking, talking, singing trope. 'Tough broad with a hidden soft spot' – groundbreaking, right? And Jeff Bridges? He's Jeff Bridges. Doing what he always does – being Jeff Bridges. Beau Bridges at least tries to act like he means it, but even he's phoning it in half the time. The whole movie just felt…flat. Predictable. The 'tension' between Jack and Susie was so telegraphed it was painful. And the jazz club scenes? Honestly, they felt like a perfume commercial. All smoke and longing looks. The soundtrack's fine, I guess, if you're into that sort of thing, but I'd rather listen to silence than have to endure another rendition of "Feelings." It's just...all so self-consciously COOL. It's trying way too hard, and ultimately, that's its downfall. Maybe I missed something, but I'm sticking to my guns on this one. Vastly overrated. Look, I'm not saying it's a bad movie, per se. It's just…meh. Perfectly watchable. Utterly forgettable. Anyone else feel the same, or am I just destined to swim upstream forever?
