Harlem Nights - Underrated Gem or Just Hype?
Alright action junkies, MikeCinema here. Just re-watched 'Harlem Nights' the other night. I gotta say, Murphy definitely had a vision with that flick. I hear he directed it (which I noted above as Unknown, but now I am remembering more and more), wrote it, and starred in it – talk about a triple threat! But I'm wondering what everyone else thinks. It's got a lot of big names, sure, but does it REALLY hold up? I'm a sucker for the old-school gangster vibes, and the costumes are top-notch. The whole feel of it is great. But the actual action choreography seems like it could have been better? Maybe it's the lack of like, bone-crunching practical effects or the old-timey camera angles, but the shootouts fall a little flat for me, know what I mean? I'd honestly have preferred some more brutal fighting and some more realistic stunts -- like a real punch, not that fake stuff. Like the scene where Quick (Eddie Murphy) is fighting those corrupt white cops in the alley. It's alright, but it could be SO much better. I wanted to feel those punches, not just see them whiff by. I'm not saying it needs John Wick levels of mayhem, but a little more 'oomph' woulda gone a long way. Still, the dialogue is super quotable, and Arsenio Hall is hilarious. Maybe I'm just being too picky? Is it nostalgia blinding me, or is this flick legitimately great outside of its historical context and star power? So, what's the verdict? Am I missing something or is 'Harlem Nights' more style than substance when it comes to action? Let me know your thoughts below!
