DeepStar Six: Totally Underrated or Am I Just a Sucker?

Okay, so I just re-watched DeepStar Six (1989) and I gotta ask...am I alone in thinking this movie isn't as terrible as everyone says? I mean, yeah, the dialogue is clunky – 'There's something down here... something evil!' – classic cheesy 80s horror. But the claustrophobia? The deep-sea setting? That creature design? It's all kinda effective in its own way, right? Specifically, I'm thinking about the scene where they're trying to weld that broken support strut after the monster attacks. When Scarpelli goes out and... well, let's just say things get messy. The tension in that scene was pretty real, despite the dodgy effects. Plus, Miguel Ferrer's performance as Snyder? Perfection. 'I'm not crazy, I'm just trying to avoid being dinner!' The guy chews scenery like it's a five-course meal. Look, I know it's no Alien, and the pacing drags at times, but I think DeepStar Six deserves a little more love than it gets. Maybe because it came out the same year as The Abyss it got lost in the shuffle? Anyone else appreciate this deep sea shlock-fest, or am I just viewing it through a 'nostalgia is a hell of a drug' lens? Come on, give me some agreement here... or at least tell me why I'm wrong! Final thought: if you like underwater creature features and aren't expecting high art, give DeepStar Six a shot. Just don't go in expecting Shakespeare. More like... cheap beer Shakespeare. Anyone else think the creature looked like a mutated horseshoe crab on bath salts? Now that's a quote waiting to happen! What are your favorite cheesy lines or moments? Let's hear 'em!
