DeepStar Six: Cheesy but with some legit underwater sound!

Okay, so I just rewatched DeepStar Six (1989) and... wow. It's a MESS. The plot is basically The Abyss meets Alien but with a budget that clearly went mostly to renting those underwater sets. Acting? Let's just say Miguel Ferrer is the high point and even he's phoning it in a bit. But as a guy who geeks out about practical effects and sound design, there were a few moments that actually impressed me. Specifically, the scene where the creature first attacks the base and the whole thing starts flooding? The sound design there – the creaking metal, the rushing water, the super-deep, almost subsonic rumbles? That actually gave me chills. They clearly put some effort into making the pressure feel real. And while the monster itself is, let's be honest, pretty goofy looking (like a deep-sea Muppet gone wrong), the practical effects used to show its impact on the station were pretty effective. Exploding bulkheads and sparks flying? Yeah, I dug that. It's obvious they took inspiration with Alien in that some of the base sounds are similar, especially the alarms. Look, I'm not going to pretend this is some hidden gem. It's a B-movie through and through. But if you're like me and can appreciate some decent sound and a few cool practical effects in the midst of a lot of, uh, questionable choices, it might be worth a watch. Just don't go in expecting groundbreaking cinema. More like…ground-drowning cinema? Heh. One last thing - anyone know who was the director? I want to see what else they've done since. It's credited as Sean S. Cunningham everywhere, but something tells me he's not the only one involved here...
