Power Glove? Now You're Playing With POWER! (Wizard Discussion)
Okay, so I finally rewatched The Wizard after... jeez, probably 20+ years? And man, it's even more hilariously 80s than I remembered. "California or bust!" anyone? Lol. Serious question though - how many Gen X/Millennial dreams were fueled by that video game tournament? I know I spent my summer trying to master Double Dragon because of it. Core memory unlocked, for sure. I think the best parts are definitely the random product placements. Holy moly, the Nintendo love is OFF THE CHARTS. It's basically a 90-minute ad, but you know what? I'm not even mad. And let's not forget Lucas saying "I love the Power Glove. It's so bad!" Iconic. But seriously, the Power Glove WAS so bad! It looked cool, felt cool, but controlling a game was next to impossible LOL. Even the acting is over the top! I can't tell if Corey Woods is just bad, or perfectly cast! His brother Jimmie, though? A bit more subtle. I gotta give it up for Jenny Lewis (before she was indie-rock royalty). She's actually pretty good as Haley. And the road trip montages? Pure 80s magic. I really feel like they captured that sense of adventure and escape. "We're gonna make it. We have to!" I was tearing up a bit there ngl. Overall, The Wizard is a goofy, nostalgia-fueled trip. Is it a GOOD movie? Debatable. Is it entertaining? Absolutely. If you want a slice of pure, unadulterated 80s cheese, seek this one out. And remember: "There's a rainbow in every quarter." Truer words were never spoken. Though I think I'd go bankrupt before I ever found that rainbow. Anyway, thoughts?
