Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On with this Movie: Great Balls of Fire!
Alright folks, scottscreens here. Just finished rewatching Great Balls of Fire! and, man, what a trip. Dennis Quaid becomes Jerry Lee Lewis. Like, seriously, you buy every single second that he's The Killer. "I am a rock and roll singer, and I am the best!" And he sells it! That performance alone is worth the price of admission, even if the movie takes some, uh, liberties with the truth. Winona Ryder as Myra Gale Brown... she's good, but honestly it's a tough role. She's playing a kid married to her cousin! The movie kinda glosses over the ick factor, trying to play it as a love story, but it's still there. The scene where Jerry Lee finds out she's only 13 is...awkward, to say the least. But hey, that's Jerry Lee, right? Pushin' boundaries. I loved the concert scenes. "Breathless, that's what I am!" The energy is insane. And the way they filmed the piano playing... you believe that Quaid is actually tearing it up. Though, you know, I read he had a piano double for the really crazy stuff. Smart move! I was thinking about it, and the soundtrack is absolutely killer (pun intended!). All the classics, and Quaid nails the vocals. It's just... a fun, flawed, and wild ride. Anyone else seen it recently? What are your thoughts? Did they capture the essence of the man, or did they sanitize things too much? “Goodbye, everybody, I'm gonna be somebody!” Let's discuss!
