Meet the Feebles... Score? Hold up...
Alright everyone, Hughes here. So I just finished watching "Meet the Feebles." Yeah, that "Meet the Feebles." Look, I'm usually all about the orchestral swells and thematic depth, but sometimes you gotta dive into the weird trenches of cinema. And this? This is a trench. A really weird trench filled with puppets doing... stuff. The thing is, I'm now obsessing over whether this thing even has a score worth talking about. It's mostly a collection of songs, right? Like, full-on musical numbers. And those songs are... something else. So intentionally bad in a way that's sometimes genius, sometimes just plain gross. I'm not sure if there's an actual, legit score weaving in and out. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm thinking it's primarily source music and those crazy production numbers. That being said, isn't that kinda genius in its own way? To have the diagetic music essentially BE the score? I think it's a theory worth exploring. What I’m mostly questioning is how it creates mood. The songs certainly have moods for their individual scenes(like the very disturbing S&M production number). I also think it has a lot to do with the imagery and visuals, which are strong. But if any of you have specific examples of actual score moments – underscore – that are actually moving, clever, or interesting in "Meet the Feebles," hit me up. My ears might be bleeding too much to distinguish it! So yeah, not exactly a John Williams situation here, but maybe there's something surprisingly subversive and interesting going on with the music in "Meet the Feebles." Maybe... maybe not, lol. What do you guys think? Is it even fair to judge this film like a normal score review?
