Intruder (1989) - Underrated Slasher Gem?

Okay, so I just rewatched "Intruder" from '89 (the one with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell cameos!) and man, it's way better than I remembered. I mean, it's a pretty standard slasher setup: supermarket night crew gets picked off. But the way it's done? Chefs kiss. What really stands out to me is the tension. The director (I honestly just know it as Scott Spiegel's best film?) really milks the confined setting. All those tight aisles and the meat locker? Claustrophobic as hell! And the POV shots from the killer? Super effective. There's this one shot where he's looking through the meat slicer before, well, you know... Gruesome, but damn effective filmmaking. The kills themselves are pretty inventive too, not just your typical slash-and-dash. Although, some of the acting is, shall we say, 'B-movie charming'. Especially Craig Stark as Randy... bless his heart but he always makes me laugh. I think what I appreciate most is how they play with expectations. You think you know who's gonna get it next, and then BAM, they throw you a curveball. Plus, the ending is genuinely batshit crazy. The whole 'mirror' thing? Messed me up as a kid. I will say though, the pacing did sag a tiny bit in the middle before picking up again for the last act. Overall, if you're a slasher fan and haven't seen "Intruder", or haven't seen it in a while, give it another look. It's not gonna win any Oscars, but it's a fun, gory, and surprisingly well-crafted horror flick. And keep an eye out for those Raimi and Campbell cameos – always a treat!
