Johnny Handsome - Is that even possible?! (plus, what was Lance Henriksen thinking?)
Okay, so I just watched Johnny Handsome (1989). Yeah, I'm late to the party, I know. Been trying to dive into some older stuff. The premise is wild – Mickey Rourke plays this dude, Johnny, who's got a seriously messed up face. Like, born that way. He gets plastic surgery in prison and a new identity. Sounds good, right? Except revenge is his main motivator. I gotta say, the whole 'making someone handsome' thing felt a little far-fetched, even for a movie. I mean, the before/after was dramatic, but could they REALLY do that back then, or even now? It kinda took me out of it for a bit. But Rourke's performance kept me intrigued. He plays the quiet, simmering rage pretty well. Also, I was so surprised to see Lance Henriksen as the Warden. He was SO good in Aliens and all those sci-fi movies, so seeing him in this kinda crime drama was... unexpected. Honestly, why would he be in this film? But man, the plot gets kinda convoluted. The whole double-cross thing with Ellen Barkin and Forest Whitaker... I was having trouble keeping up. It felt like too many threads going at once. Did anyone else feel that way? I kept wondering if he was ever actually going to 'go straight'. I'm still a little confused if his performance was good or bad. I wasn't sure if Mickey was acting, or if that's just how he is. Overall, it was a decent watch. Not gonna lie, it's probably not one I would watch again, but I was still curious the whole time. What did you guys think of the ending? Was it satisfying or a bit of a letdown? And seriously, someone explain to me how that kinda surgery is even remotely possible!
