Edward Scissorhands: A Dark Theory About Peg Boggs

Alright film fanatics, Andersoncuts here, ready to dive deep. Let's talk 'Edward Scissorhands'. On the surface, it's a quirky tale of acceptance, prejudice, and topiary. But I've been chewing on something. What if Peg Boggs, bless her heart, isn't just a well-meaning Avon lady? What if she's THE catalyst for Edward's downfall? Think about it. She sees Edward not as a person, but as a project. She brings him home, parades him around, and essentially uses him to elevate her own social standing. Remember the scene where she's fixing his hair and makeup for the neighborhood ladies? Yikes, talk about objectification! And while she seems sympathetic, she ultimately fails to protect him when things get hairy (pun intended... sorry). She hides him in her house instead of doing the obvious thing and calling his creator's family. Sure, Winona Ryder's character, Kim, is the love interest, but it's Peg who really sets the stage for everything that follows and decides his fate. My theory is that Peg, subconsciously or not, is drawn to Edward because he fills a void in her own life. Maybe she feels invisible in suburbia, maybe she craves attention. Whatever the reason, she exploits him, and that exploitation ultimately contributes to the tragic ending. He's a novelty, then a liability, and she abandons him. Think about that last scene of her telling her granddaughter about Edward. The whole town forgot about him, except for her. She gets to hold the story and therefore his life in her hands. Am I saying Peg is a villain? No, but I think she's far more complex and maybe even culpable than she's given credit for. It's easy to see her as a savior, or just a kind woman, but I think there's a darker undercurrent to her actions. What do you guys think? Am I reaching here, or is there something to this Peg Boggs culpability theory?
