Pretty Woman: My Problematic Fave (Hear Me Out!)
Okay, people, let's talk Pretty Woman. I know, I know, it's basically a Cinderella story with a healthy dose of, shall we say, '90s sensibilities. And yeah, looking back, the whole 'rich dude rescues prostitute' trope is... definitely something. But honestly? I still love it. Like, really love it. Don't judge me! My theory (and it's just a theory, a film-lover's hunch, so don't @ me too hard) is that the appeal isn't really about the fairytale romance, but about Vivian finding her own strength and demanding respect. Remember the polo scene? Ugh, I cringed. But the way she stood up to the snobby saleswomen and then finally got her revenge later? Chef's kiss. And Edward changing his business practices, becoming less cutthroat? Huge character developement. I think deep down, we all want to see underdogs triumph and societal norms challenged, even in a fluffy rom-com package. Plus, Julia Roberts' smile could melt glaciers, and Richard Gere's... well, he's Richard Gere. Let's be real, the chemistry is undeniable. I still get a little teary-eyed when he climbs the fire escape. Is it cheesy? Absolutely. But sometimes, cheese is exactly what I need. Anyone else feel similarly conflicted? Am I totally off-base? Let me know your thoughts! Also, anyone else secretly try to recreate Vivian's bathtub scene with the bubble bath and the Walkman? ... just me? Okay then. 😅
