Die Hard 2: Just Hear Me Out...Is This a Christmas Romance?
Okay, okay, hear me out, people. I was just watching Die Hard 2 for like, the millionth time (shoutout HBO Max for always having my back at 3 AM). And I had this weird thought. Is it… kinda a Christmas romance? Like, a very violent, explosion-y one? Think about it. The ENTIRE movie, McClane's motivation is getting Holly safe. He's not saving hostages because it's his JOB really, he's losing his freakin' mind because his WIFE is circling Dulles in a plane. Remember that scene where he's talking to her on the radio and you can hear the fear in his voice? Man, Bruce Willis sells that HARD. And the entire time all he wants to do is make sure she is safe, and he is doing it at christmas with all the holiday tunes! And okay, sure, he's stopping terrorists and saving hundreds of lives, but it ALL comes back to Holly, right? He's fighting so he can have that Christmas reunion. I’m not saying its like, the main point. But, maybe it’s just a theory of mine that the best romance movies are wrapped in action. Maybe the true Die Hard love is the love of his wife. I dunno, maybe I'm just sleep-deprived and reaching. But that final shot of them hugging after all that chaos? Definitely gives me the warm fuzzies...even if everything else has been blown to smithereens. What do you guys think? Am I crazy, or is Die Hard 2 low-key the most hardcore Christmas rom-com ever?
