Red October: Ramius was totally planning to defect the whole time!
Okay, so I finally watched The Hunt for Red October last night. I know, I know, I'm super late to the party, but I'm on this classic movie kick. Anyway, I have a theory, and I think it's pretty solid. Everyone's all worried that Ramius is going to launch a nuke at the US, right? But what if that's exactly what he wanted them to think so they wouldn't stop him from defecting? I mean, think about it. He kills the political officer right at the beginning—huge risk if he was going to attack. He also chooses a super-secretly devout crew and has a plan prepared for them. Then he has Birney start the exercise to make it look like he wants to attack Norfolk, but as soon as the crew accepts it he sends them to a whole different place! I think he knew the Americans would freak out and send everything after him, which would give him the perfect cover to, like, sneak into a US port. And Jack Ryan being able to figure everything out so fast, I am guessing Ramius really wanted someone to figure it out. Plus that whole scene where Ramius and Ryan finally meet? When Ramius says “he’d buy him a drink?” I feel like that’s confirmation that Ramius knew someone was going to figure out his plan. That was totally the point of the movie! It also explains the ending. Like, the reveal that all the senior officers were in on the defection feels kinda... forced? Almost like Ramius added it later. Maybe he only let them in on it after he knew he was going to make it to the US. Anyways, that my theory, what do you guys think? Did I miss anything?
