Okay, but did anyone else notice the coats in Red October?!
So, I just re-watched "The Hunt for Red October" (amazing movie, btw, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time). Sean Connery is, well, Sean Connery, and the whole submarine tension thing is gripping... BUT! Did anyone else completely obsess over the outerwear? Seriously, the costuming in this film is subtly brilliant. I was practically drooling over some of those Russian naval coats. So much wool! Specifically, there's this one scene when Ramius is giving orders on the bridge (I think it's early on, before everything really goes down), and his coat looked SO warm and well-fitted. Like, I need to find a vintage military surplus store immediately. And not just Ramius - most of the Soviet officers had really stylish, classic coats. They make the whole 'silent hunter' vibe even more intimidating, somehow. So question: Is it just me, or did the costumes (especially the coats!) really add to the film's atmosphere and the characters' presence? Then you have the American side, Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin)... his coats are less imposing, more like, "I'm an analyst but I still have a serious job!" He has one scene on a boat where he's wearing a heavy duffel coat - it's practical, I guess, but doesn't have the same oomph. Does the costuming reflect the more reactive role of the Americans maybe? What do we think? Totally random, I know, but I had to ask! I'm always looking for good coat inspiration for fall/winter, and Red October might just be my new style bible, lol. Anyway, just wondering if anyone else noticed or has thought about the costuming, especially the coats, in this movie. It's really good but I can't find much of anything about it...
