Robin Williams Did What?? Okay, "Awakenings" Thoughts!

Okay, so I finally watched "Awakenings" last night. I knew it was supposed to be a 'serious' Robin Williams movie, and you guys know I'm usually all about the comedy! But, wow, this one really got to me. It's about this doctor (Williams) who gives this experimental drug to patients who've been basically frozen for decades. Leonard, played by Robert De Niro, is the first. The scene where Leonard first wakes up? Freaky and amazing at the same time. De Niro seriously KILLED IT. You could see the wonder and confusion in his eyes. And Williams played the shy, awkward doctor so well, it was hard to believe it was him. It's crazy to think about being trapped inside your own body like that... I kept pausing to google the real disease, encephalitis lethargica - it's truly heartbreaking. The ending... ugh. Knew it was coming, but still gut-wrenching. The way they slowly started to regress after having been given a chance at life? It's just so unfair. Reminded me of that movie 'Lorenzo's Oil', which is also based on a true story, and also makes you want to cry, lol. I think what really struck me was that the movie wasn't just about the disease, but how important human connection is, for EVERYONE. I wish I knew who had directed this one, they should be more well known. So, yeah, definitely worth a watch if you're in the mood for something thought-provoking and a little sad. Bring tissues! And maybe some chocolate, because you'll need a pick-me-up after.
