Nikita (1990) - Anyone else bothered by the romance aspect?
Okay, so I finally got around to watching Nikita (1990) after hearing so much about it! I admit, I was hooked from the very beginning. Anne Parillaud is amazing, and the whole concept of turning a street punk into a sophisticated assassin is just fascinating. The training montages were cool, and I loved the suspense. But... I'm a bit conflicted, and wanted to see if anyone else feels the same way. Specifically, I'm talking about the Marco/Nikita romance. Like, I get it, she's isolated and vulnerable, and he seems like a genuinely nice guy (for a while, at least). But something about it felt a little... off? It felt kinda rushed, and I wasn't entirely convinced that it was built on much more than just her desperation for normalcy and his (maybe misguided?) desire to "save" her. The whole restaurant scene where they first really connect felt a bit forced, I don't know maybe it's just me. Not to mention some of the stuff she has to do later in the film felt weird alongside knowing that relationship existed. Did anyone else feel like the relationship with Marco felt a bit...problematic? Or did I completely miss something? I'm curious to know what others thought. The movie is still good, but the romance just didn't fully land for me. I'm definitely thinking of watching some more of director Luc Besson's movies soon!
