Nikita (1990) - Still Holds Up, Kinda!
Okay, so I just rewatched Nikita (1990) for like, the millionth time. Seriously, Anne Parillaud is mesmerizing. I keep forgetting how brutal the beginning is... that whole drug-fueled rampage scene? Yikes. And then BAM, she's suddenly a government assassin? Talk about a career change. I always felt bad for Bob (Tchéky Karyo). He's trying to be her mentor/father figure/whatever, and she's just... Nikitta. Spelling error intended. The training montage is pure 90s cheese, but I still love it. And the romantic scene with Marco (Jean-Hugues Anglade) is actually kind of sweet, even though you know it's doomed from the start. He's so normal, she's so... not. The restaurant scene when she has to kill that guy? SO tense. And the cleanup crew is terrifying. Jean Reno is always amazing, even in small roles. The ending is still a bit of a head-scratcher, though. Does she really escape? Or is it all just a fantasy? Maybe I'm missing something. Also - Luc Bresson, but I forgot the name of the director for a minute. It's early, gimme a break. Anyone else watched this recently? What are your thoughts? Am I just wearing rose tinted glasses or does this movie ACTUALLY hold up? It's got some flaws, for sure, but it's still got that Luc Besson style grit I like, and it's just so damn stylish.
