TMNT (1990) - Still Holds Up, But How Does it Compare to the Comics?

Okay, so I just re-watched the original TMNT movie from 1990 and, wow, it still hits! The practical effects are amazing, especially the turtle costumes. I mean, they actually look like teenagers struggling with their size and awkwardness. The fight choreography is also way better than I remembered. I love how they incorporated humor without making it overly silly, you know? That pizza scene? Chef's kiss. But as a big comic book reader, I always wonder how well it actually adapts the source material. Specifically, I'm curious about Shredder. In the movie, he's definitely menacing, but he feels… toned down? The comics, especially the early ones, portrayed him as a REALLY ruthless dude. Did the movie soften him too much to make it more family-friendly? And what about Splinter's backstory? The movie gives a decent overview, but it skips over a lot of the more complex stuff from the Mirage comics. Also, anyone else think Elias Koteas as Casey Jones was PERFECT casting? He brought so much of that crazy vigilante energy to the role! Judith Hoag as April was pretty good too, but I always felt like she was missing some of April's sass from the comics. Maybe it was the hairstyle? I dunno. So, what are everyone's thoughts? How does the 1990 movie stack up as an adaptation? Does it capture the spirit of the comics, or does it prioritize accessibility over accuracy? I'm eager to hear your opinions!
