Wild at Heart: More than Meets the Eye? (A Few Slightly Baked Thoughts)

Alright folks, scottscreens here, back with another deep dive... or maybe more of a shallow wade into the wonderfully weird world of David Lynch's 'Wild at Heart'. Now, some folks call it crazy, some call it brilliant, I'm somewhere in that Venn diagram of confused appreciation. My theory? It's NOT just a love story, it's a freakin' fairy tale. Hear me out. We've got a damsel (Lula, kinda), a knight (Sailor, the Elvis-obsessed knight), and a wicked witch (Momma dearest, obvs). The whole thing is drenched in symbolism and exaggerated characters. Like, is anyone actually that messed up? I think Lynch is playing with archetypes, amping them up to eleven. "This world is wild at heart and weird on top...", remember? It's not a documentary, folks. Specifically, that scene with the accident on the road? That's straight out of a Brothers Grimm story. Like, a random act of hyper-violence that serves absolutely no plot purpose other than to show the sheer brutality of the world they're in. A world where good and evil collide in the most absurd ways. And then there's Bobby Peru... Willem Dafoe just chews the scenery to bits, but he's essentially the embodiment of temptation, right? Leading Sailor astray, testing his loyalty to Lula. "The course of true love never did run smooth," as some bard once said. And what IS up with the Wizard of Oz references? It's not just a throwaway, I think. Lula's ruby red shoes, the Glinda-esque vision at the end... is she somehow a Dorothy figure trying to find her way home? Is Sailor her Tin Man (heart), Scarecrow (brains), or Cowardly Lion (courage)? I'm thinking all three, rolled into one leather-clad package. Honestly, I'm not entirely sure, but that's the beauty of Lynch, isn't it? He leaves you with more questions than answers. And a craving for cherry pie. So yeah, fairy tale. Maybe. Or maybe I've just watched too much bad TV. Either way, I'm sticking with it. What do you guys think? Am I totally off my rocker, or is there something to this? Let me know in the comments! Don't be a dingus... or a Bobby Peru.
