Grand High Witch still gives me the creeps!
Okay, so I know The Witches (1990) isn't exactly highbrow cinema, but as an international film lover, I still have a soft spot for movies that manage to be genuinely creepy and whimsical at the same time. I remember being absolutely terrified of the Grand High Witch, played by Anjelica Huston, when I first saw it as a kid. And rewatching it now, her transformation scene is still pretty disturbing! The makeup effects are surprisingly good, even if they're a little dated. I think what makes it work so well is the blend of Roald Dahl's dark humor with a relatively straightforward, slightly gothic, approach to the visuals. It's not all silly jokes; it's genuinely unsettling. I mean, the whole concept of witches plotting to turn children into mice is pretty horrifying when you really think about it. Plus, the score is iconic! I find the English seaside setting adds a lot to the atmosphere. It's so quaint and picturesque, which just makes the witchy goings-on even more jarring. Even though they changed the ending a bit, I feel it really holds true to the spirit of the book. I will say, though, some of the CGI mouse effects haven't aged well. The scene where Luke, as a mouse, is trying to sneak around the kitchen to mix the potion... yikes. But hey, it was the 90s! Overall, it's a flawed but very memorable film. Did it give anyone else nightmares as a kid, or was that just me (and my overactive imagination)? And did you prefer the book's ending more? Let me know your thoughts!
