Air America Score: Underrated or Just Plain Bad?

Alright fellow soundtrack nerds, HughesReviews back at ya. I finally got around to watching (or re-watching, honestly) Air America the other night. You know, the Mel Gibson/Robert Downey Jr. flick about the CIA's airline in Laos. The movie itself is... well, let's just say it's a product of its time, heavy on the cheese. But the score... that's what I'm curious about. Charles Gross did the music, and it's... busy. Like, really busy. There's a lot of synthesized instrumentation which dates it pretty hard, but sometimes it almost works? There are little moments where the ethnic percussion comes through, especially during the flying sequences (I'm thinking specifically of the scene where Billie and Jack are first introduced to the Air America operation and they're flying all over the place), and I almost dig it. But then the over-the-top 80s synth crashes back in and I'm like, "Ugh, no." Does anyone else feel this way? I keep wondering if a more restrained score, maybe something heavier on traditional Southeast Asian instruments or even just a more orchestral approach, would have elevated the film. I get that they were going for that 'wild and crazy' vibe to match the movie's tone, but I honestly think it just makes the whole thing feel even more dated. So, what do you all think? Am I being too harsh on Gross? Is there some hidden genius I'm missing here? Or is it just a case of a score that perfectly matches a pretty mediocre movie?
