The Rookie (1990): Underrated Action Cheese?
Okay, so I finally got around to watching "The Rookie" (1990) with Clint Eastwood and Charlie Sheen. I dunno, I went in expecting something totally generic, but I was actually kinda entertained? The plot is pretty standard buddy-cop stuff – Eastwood's a grizzled, rule-breaking veteran and Sheen's the fresh-faced rookie he's reluctantly paired with. But the action sequences are surprisingly well-done, even If they are a bit ridiculous at times. The car chases are particularly memorable. Anyone know who directed this thing BTW? Eastwood's performance is classic Clint, all squinty eyes and dry wit. Honestly, Charlie Sheen holds his own surprisingly well. There's one scene where they're in a warehouse shootout, and the way the light catches Eastwood's face as he lines up a shot is just chef's kiss. Super classic lighting. The whole thing is just gloriously over-the-top, like a Michael Bay film before Michael Bay got, well, Michael Bay-ish. It's definitely not high art, don't get me wrong. The dialogue is cheesy, and the plot is predictable. And some of the acting choices are... questionable. But as far as pure, unadulterated, popcorn-chomping action flicks go, I'd give it a solid 7/10. It's got that 90s action movie charm, you know? Anyone else seen this? Lemme know your thoughts!
