Young Guns II: Okay, so I have thoughts...
Okay, so I just re-watched Young Guns II. Look, I know it's not Citizen Kane, but it's got a certain… charm? Is that the right word? I mean, it's pure 90s cheese, but in a way that I kinda appreciate. The story of Billy the Kid heading south is always a fun one. I'm particularly interested in how they visually separate Billy from the rest of the gang in this one. Emilio Estevez gets a lot of close-ups (maybe a little too many), and the direction really highlights his almost manic energy. It's like, everyone else is just trying to survive, and he's legitimately having FUN evading capture. I think it's a stylistic choice that's not always subtle, and it might not be good good, but it's interesting. And that soundtrack? Bon Jovi? Come on, you gotta admit it's catchy. Also, I'm a sucker for Western landscapes, and they got some beautiful shots in this one. The contrast between the wide open plains and the cramped saloons really accentuates the feeling of being trapped, even in such a vast space. Plus, you gotta love Christian Slater chewing the scenery as Arkansaw! He's so over-the-top, it's delightful. I'm not saying it's perfect (the historical accuracy is, uh, questionable), but it's a fun ride. Anyone else have some love (or hate!) for this one? One last thing, I could've sworn I read somewhere that Geoff Murphy directed this? But now I'm seeing it wasn't him? I'm gonna have to look that up. Anyway, thoughts?
