"Marked for Death" - Underrated Seagal? Or just... bad?
Alright, so I just re-watched "Marked for Death" (1990). I gotta ask, am I missing something here? I love a good Seagal flick as much as the next guy, but this one kinda felt all over the place. The opening with the DEA bust in Colombia was actually pretty tight - good pacing, solid action. Sets up Hatcher as a force to be reckoned with. But then he "retires" and suddenly the whole thing shifts gears. My biggest issue is the structure. It's like two movies smashed together: the classic 'ex-lawman cleans up his old neighborhood' thing THEN, completely out of nowhere, it morphs into voodoo and Jamaican posses? I'm not saying it's unentertaining, Lord knows I was laughing when Screwface was doing his thing. And some of the fight choreography is classic Seagal bone-breaking goodness. BUT did anyone else think the entire Jamaican subplot felt tacked on? Like they ran out of ideas halfway through? Specifically, that scene where Hatcher is basically immune to voodoo? Was that supposed to be badass or just... unintentionally hilarious? And the pacing of the climax felt super rushed after all the buildup with Screwface. I just wanna know if other people feel the same way or if I'm missing some deeper appreciation for late-stage Seagal cheese here. Maybe I'm just being too harsh? Lemme know what you thought.
