Joe Versus the Volcano: Is it ALL a Dream, Man?
Okay, hear me out, because I've been marinating on this one for YEARS. "Joe Versus the Volcano"... underrated? Absolutely. But what is it? Is it just a weird, whimsical journey of self-discovery? Or is it something more... like a dream? I think the whole damn thing is Joe's dying fever dream! Think about it. The fluorescent lighting and soul-crushing monotony of his job at American Standard Parts... it's too on-the-nose. Then BAM! He's got a brain cloud, and he's offered a life-changing, ridiculously improbable opportunity. He confronts his fears, gets a tan... even meets Patricia, DeDe, and Angelica – all played by Meg Ryan! It's like his subconscious is throwing him every possible 'good thing' before he goes. And the whole boat trip sequence? That's pure surrealist imagery. "Hello, I am Dagny! I'm the skipper. I hope I can live up to the dream!" Live up to the dream, Dagny? You practically are the dream! And the Volcano gods? Don't even get me started. Are they real? I don't think so. They're just a manifestation of Joe's anxieties about death and the unknown. The whole movie feels... off. Like a beautifully crafted, slightly-too-sweet candy. One that hits you different if you look too long. It has to be Joe's last moments, right? He finds all he wants and all he wants is to live. What do you all think? Am I looking too deep into this, or does the "brain cloud equals dream state" theory hold water? Maybe it should hold sea since we're talking Volcanoes. Okay, I'll see myself out for that one. Also, anyone else wish they could just yeet their luggage into the sea like Joe?
