Revenge (1990) - Costner's Best Performance?

Okay, so I just re-watched "Revenge" (1990) and wow. I'd forgotten how intense that movie is. I know Kevin Costner gets a lot of flack sometimes, but I genuinely think this is one of his best, most underrated performances. He plays the jaded ex-Navy pilot so well, and the chemistry with Madeleine Stowe is electric. I mean, the whole setup is pretty simple - he falls for the wife of his powerful friend, and things go south fast - but the way it's executed is just brutal. Anyone else think this stacks up well against some of his other roles? The desert scene after her... incident (trying to avoid major spoilers haha) is absolutely gut-wrenching. The way she's transformed, and Costner's quiet rage and determination – it's powerful stuff. I know a lot of people might find the violence gratuitous, but for me, it really services the story and the themes of betrayal and yeah, revenge. It's definitely not a feel-good movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it sucked me in. Also, Anthony Quinn as Tiburon is terrifying. He really embodies that casual, ruthless power. I'm curious what everyone else thinks about this movie. I've never actually read the novella it's based on, so I'm wondering if anyone knows how faithful the adaptation is? I kinda want to check it out now. And does anyone else think the ending is… unsatisfying? I mean, I get it thematically, but it felt like it lacked some punch. What are your thoughts? Let's discuss!
