The Grifters: Little Details I Keep Noticing (Barbara Hershey is a QUEEN)

Okay, so I've watched "The Grifters" like... at least five times now. And every time, I catch something new. It's insane! This time, I was really fixated on Lily (Barbara Hershey). She's so cold and calculated, but you can see these little cracks sometimes. Like, when she's talking to Roy about his father, there's this flicker of something almost... human? It's gone in a flash, but it's there. And then there's the scene in the hotel room after she "takes care" of Mintz. The way she just calmly sits down and starts cleaning her nails? Chilling! But also, you almost feel sorry for her? I mean, she's trapped in this awful life. It makes you wonder what made her that way. Did she ever have a chance to be anything else? My question is: do you guys think Lily actually cared about Roy at all? Or was he just another mark, another pawn in her game? I lean towards the latter, but that fleeting moment of vulnerability during the father conversation makes me wonder. I'm probably just projecting though lol. Also, unrelated but related, Annette Bening is awesome, but Barbara Hershey's performance kinda blows everyone else out of the water, right? I think she should have won an Oscar for this. Just sayin'.
