Blue Steel: Underrated or Just Plain Dumb?
Okay, so I finally caved and watched "Blue Steel." Everyone's always going on about how Kathryn Bigelow's a genius, blah blah blah. Look, I get it, she can direct action. But honestly, this movie felt like a really stylish, but ultimately, kinda dumb 90s thriller. Jamie Lee Curtis is fine, but this whole thing hinges on a serial killer falling in love with her because she's...a cop? It's pretty flimsy. And the whole 'he stole the gun from the crime scene' thing? Come on. No cop in their right mind would let something like that happen. It just feels like a lazy plot device to get the story moving. Maybe I'm missing something profound. Is it supposed to be like, a commentary on toxic masculinity or something? If it is, it's hitting you over the head with it. There are moments that work, I'll give you that. Some of the tension is genuinely palpable, especially when she's being stalked. But then it just all falls apart at the end with the over-the-top shootout. It's like Bigelow couldn't decide if she wanted to make a thoughtful thriller or a brainless action flick, so she went for both and failed. Honestly, I think people are just willing to give it a pass because Kathryn Bigelow directed it. I'm gonna be controversial here, but I think it's mostly style over substance. Am I alone in feeling this way? Or is everyone just pretending it's some hidden gem?
