Tales from the Darkside Movie: Kinda Creepy, Kinda Campy, All Heart?
Okay, so I just rewatched "Tales from the Darkside: The Movie" and WOW, I forgot how much I actually... enjoyed it? I mean, it's definitely not high art, let's be real. But there's this weird, nostalgic charm to it that just gets me. The framing device with the little boy (Matthew Lawrence! Joey from Blossom!) trying to stall the witch (Debbie Harry SLAYS) from eating him by telling her scary stories is kinda genius. Like, she's actually going to eat him! That's messed up! I was squirming the whole time. My favorite segment has always been "Lover's Vow." Watching James Remar fall for a gargoyle-woman and have to promise not to say her name? Ugh, my heart! The ending is SO brutal. I literally gasped. Maybe I'm just a sucker for tragic love stories, even when they involve stone creatures. I did think the mummy story was probably the weakest link, though. It felt a bit rushed and just... not as creepy? But seriously, that gargoyle love story? Give me all the feels! And let's not forget the practical effects! They are so gloriously cheesy and dated now, but that's part of the appeal, right? I mean, the creature designs are actually pretty cool, and the gore, while tame by today's standards, still has a certain impact. I know some people might find it goofy, but I thought it was a genuinely fun little horror anthology. Plus, Julianne Moore in one of her early roles? Yes, please. Maybe it's just nostalgia talking, but I'm giving this one a solid thumbs up! Anyone else get these feels? Oh! And one last thing - I swear Christian Slater is in this movie for like, 2 minutes max, but he makes SUCH an impression. Talk about star power, even in the tiniest role! Okay, I'm done rambling now. Go watch it and tell me what YOU think!
