Tales from the Darkside Movie: Underrated Anthology Gem?

Okay, let's talk Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (1990). I saw it years ago, and it's been simmering in my brain ever since. Anthology horror is always a mixed bag, but I think this one holds up surprisingly well. The framing device – the kid telling spooky stories to avoid being eaten by Betty, this suburban witch, is genuinely creepy and sets the tone perfectly. And Betty is played by Deborah Harry, and she just kills it (pun intended). Her performance is so over-the-top and memorable. The stories themselves are a mixed bag, sure. I think 'Lot 249' with the mummy is probably the strongest, directed by John Harrison. The pacing is great, and the practical effects are fantastic. The 'Cat from Hell' segment is… well, it's memorable, let's just say that. It's pure Carpenter camp, and I’m all for it. The third segment, "Lover's Vow" with Julianne Moore, is the one I always forget about the most. It's not bad, but it doesn't have the same punch or scares as the others. Plus, it feels tonally different somehow, more depressing than the others. My biggest gripe is actually the opening. That animated logo with the dark side creeping across the screen? Perfection. Then that amazing theme song kicks in and it gets me so pumped every time. But there's a slight delay at the beginning of that intro, and it throws the timing off. I think it would hold up better if the music came in immediately. I know this is nitpicky, but it's a noticeable imperfection that detracts from my experience. I could be wrong, but the opening makes a promise the rest of the film only almost delivers on. Overall, Tales from the Darkside is a fun, cheesy, and occasionally genuinely unsettling horror anthology. I think it deserves more love. Has anyone else seen it recently? What are your favorite segments?
