'Memphis Belle': Overrated Nostalgia Trip or Something More?
Okay, okay, I finally caved and watched 'Memphis Belle.' I know, I know, it's a 'classic' war movie, blah blah blah. Honestly? I'm underwhelmed. Look, I get the whole 'band of brothers' thing, the pressure of war, and the stakes involved, but this movie just felt...contrived. Like they were trying WAY too hard to make me feel something. And don't even get me started on the dialogue. The 'motivational' speeches felt so forced. I mean, I'm sure guys said stuff like that, but the way it was delivered was just...cheesy. And the flying scenes? I'm not a WWII aviation expert or anything, but some of it just looked…off. The only decent acting was was Matthew Modine, but that's hardly enough to save it. He was pretty convincing as the conflicted captain. Maybe my expectations were too high, but honestly, I think people are blinded by nostalgia. This isn't 'Saving Private Ryan', it's not a particularly great war film. I'd take 'Twelve O'Clock High' or maybe even 'Flyboys' (yeah, I said it!) over this any day. It's so sanitised. Tell me what you thought, though. Am I missing something here? Or is it just me who thinks this one doesn't really take off?
