The Russia House: Is Barley the real spy? Hear me out...

Okay, so I just re-watched The Russia House (1990) and something struck me this time around that I hadn't really considered before. Everyone's focused on Barley Scott Blair being this reluctant, totally-out-of-his-depth go-between, right? I mean, Sean Connery does play that vibe perfectly. But what if, like, deep down, he was playing a much longer game than anyone suspected? Think about it. He's supposedly just a book editor, a boozer who lives in Lisbon. But he's got connections to Russian dissidents and this secret manuscript falls into his lap. It's almost too convenient. Plus, the way he handles himself under pressure, even when he's clearly freaked out, there's a kind of calculated nonchalance. Remember that scene in Russia when he's buying those toys for Katya's kids? Seems innocent, but what if he's using that as a cover, dropping signals or something? I KNOW it sounds kinda out there, but maybe he's been a sleeper agent all along, working outside the official channels. The movie wants you to believe he's just this normal guy swept up in something way bigger than him, but what if he's the reason it even started? Maybe that manuscript was supposed to get to him somehow, and he was just playing dumb to draw everyone else, including British intelligence, into his plan. The whole thing could be some elaborate, morally ambiguous chess match that only he fully understands. I have no clue what that plan is to be honest, but the more I think about, the more Barley seems like the only one who's really in control of his life at the end. IDK, maybe I'm reading way too much into it, but it definitely adds another layer to the film. The ending is so ambiguous! Thoughts? Anyone else ever get this vibe? I might just be over-caffeinated, lol. But it's fun to think about!
