Okay, "Two Evil Eyes" - Am I Missing Something?
So, I finally got around to watching "Two Evil Eyes" (1990), and I'm... confused? Like, I LOVE Poe, I really do. But this movie felt so uneven. The 'Valdemar' segment was honestly pretty creepy. I felt genuinely uncomfortable watching Harvey Keitel's character slowly losing it. The makeup effects were really well done, and the whole greedy wife plot was classic Poe, playing with my sense of justice! But then the 'Black Cat' segment came on and... I just didn't connect. I guess I appreciate that it was trying to be a bit tongue-in-cheek? Harvey Keitel returning in the second half did throw me off though. He's a great actor, don't get me wrong, but the constant over use of him in the film kinda made me chuckle more than fear. I felt sorry for that cat, honestly! He did NOTHING wrong, and that journalist was a total jerk! The whole thing just felt a bit silly compared to the slow burn of the first story. I think the inconsistency hurt the whole thing. The tonal shift between the segments was jarring. Did anyone else feel that way? Maybe I went in with too high of expectations because of the Poe connection? I wasn't exactly bored, but I was not moved like I usually am by Poe's writing. Maybe I just didn't understand the meaning of the film, and that's why I'm so underwhelmed. Tell me your thoughts, please! Overall, the movie was a mixed bag for me. The first story was genuinely unnerving, but the second story fell flat. The makeup and practical effects were great, especially in the first half, but the characters and story of the second were forgettable.
