Bullet in the Head: Brutal, but the Score... Wow!

Okay, so I finally got around to watching John Woo's "Bullet in the Head." Wow, heavy stuff. Probably the darkest thing I've seen from him, and I've seen Hard Boiled. The plot, for those who don't know, is basically about these three childhood friends who get tangled up with gangsters and then end up in Vietnam during the war. Things… do not go well, to put it mildly. I'm not gonna lie, there were moments I was pretty disturbed. The violence is intense, and the moral decay of the characters is pretty rough to watch. Definitely not a feel-good movie, haha. But, and this is a big but for me – the score! Holy moly. I'm still trying to figure out who composed the main themes (some say it's a mix of sources, heavily referencing Ennio Morricone) but whatever it is, it's incredible. It perfectly captures the escalating tension and the feeling of dread. There's this recurring melody, especially during the Saigon scenes, that just haunts you. Really elevated the emotional impact of everything happening on screen, even when it wasn't always easy to watch. I literally went searching for a soundtrack album immediately, with no luck sadly. I keep thinking about Ben's (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) performance. He really sells the transformation from a somewhat naive guy into someone broken by war and betrayal. And when Yim (Waise Lee) starts going off the deep end... yikes. He's convincingly unhinged. The pacing is kinda erratic at times, and some of the plot points felt a bit contrived, like the whole gold smuggling subplot seemed a little much? But overall, it's a powerful, if flawed, film. So yeah, while I wouldn't call it an enjoyable watch in the traditional sense, "Bullet in the Head" left a definite impression. If you're a fan of John Woo and are prepared for some seriously dark stuff, check it out. But mostly, listen out for that amazing score. It alone almost makes the experience worth it. What are your thoughts on this one? Anyone know the official composer credits?
