Lulu: More Than Just Sex and Shock Value?

Okay, so I finally watched "The Ages of Lulu" (Las edades de Lulú) and wow, it definitely isn't a film you easily forget. I was bracing myself for something really exploitative, given its reputation, and while it is very sexually explicit, I actually ended up thinking there's a lot more going on beneath the surface. I'm Priya, by the way, and I'm always looking for movies that push boundaries and make you think, regardless of where they come from. What really struck me was Lulu's almost desperate search for connection. From the beginning, it's obvious she's starved for affection. That scene at the concert with Pablo feels less like a seduction and more like a young woman latching onto the first person who shows her any kind of attention. And while his actions are definitely questionable (understatement!), I almost felt sorry for both of them in a weird way. It’s like, she's naive and searching, and he's wrestling with his own demons. Then, there’s the relationship with Marcelo. It’s messed up, obviously, but it delves into toxic dynamics so honestly. My theory is that the film isn’t just about Lulu's sexual awakening, but about how easily a young person's vulnerability can be manipulated, and how damaging a lack of genuine affection can be. The sex isn't just there for shock value (though it undeniably contributes to that), but serves as a manifestation of her deep-seated need to be loved and seen. Don’t get me wrong, it's uncomfortable and disturbing at times, but I think the film is ultimately trying to say something important about trauma, desire, and the search for identity. Anyone else have thoughts on this? Am I giving Bigas Luna to much credit maybe? I'm really curious to hear other interpretations. I'm sure I'm missing stuff too!
