Am I the only one who finds 'My Mother's Castle' kinda... overrated?
Okay, so everyone's always going on about how charming and heartwarming 'My Mother's Castle' is, and I watched it finally, expecting some sort of life-altering experience. And... it was fine. Pleasant enough. But frankly, I'm struggling to see what all the fuss is about. It's like everyone's afraid to admit it's just... a decently made, pretty, but ultimately rather safe period piece. I guess what bothers me is that everyone treats it like it's some profound exploration of childhood, and it just feels... sanitized. Like a postcard version of growing up in France. Even that whole "crossing private land" bit felt like a setup for a feel-good ending rather than actual tension. Remember that bit where they kept repeating the same thing over and over with the different land owners? Yeah, not a fan. I also could not stand the father's actor, like what's with over-exaggerating every line? Don't get me wrong, the scenery is beautiful, and the kid actor (Julien Ciamaca) is alright. But is that enough to elevate it to the status of some cinematic treasure? I feel like I'm missing something here. Anyone else feel like it's a bit... vanilla? Or am I just being my usual contrarian self?
