Silence of the Lambs -- Overrated, or am I just missing something?

Okay, hear me out. I just rewatched The Silence of the Lambs, and while I appreciate the acting (especially Hopkins, let's be real), I'm still not convinced it deserves the 'best movie ever' hype it gets. Maybe it's because I came to it late, and seen too many ripoffs, but the plot felt... predictable? Girl talks to creepy dude to catch another creepy dude. Seen it. Plus, the whole Buffalo Bill thing? Dude is sewing a suit out of skin? It's trying way too hard to be shocking, and ends up just being absurd. Like, I get it, he's disturbed. But come ON. And the big reveal? The moths? Please. It's visually striking, sure, but the symbolic weight people give it is ridiculous. Some say it's about transformation, others say it's about overcoming inner darkness. I say it's about a director who suddenly realised his serial killer needed something to make him stand out. Feels tacked-on. Also, and this is probably sacrilege, I find Clarice kind of... boring? She's supposed to be this strong, determined woman, but she spends most of the movie looking scared and deferring to the men around her. I get that its part of the character arc, but it still rubs me the wrong way. Maybe if they developed her backstory more? Or gave her a scene where she actually kicked ass instead of just looking stressed? I think the problem is the screenplay leans to heavily on the source material, what might have been shocking then seems like tired trope now. So, yeah, I'm probably in the minority here, but I think The Silence of the Lambs is good, but not great. It's a well-made thriller boosted by some stellar performances, but the story itself is pretty standard, and the attempts at 'deep' symbolism fall flat for me. Convince me otherwise! What am I missing?
